Will New Nebraska Bill Open The Door For More Hemp Farmers?
The latest bill will now allow the farmers to grow hemp in Nebraska. As of last year, only ten growers have received their licenses to grow the crop. The growers say that they are missing out on a blossoming cash crop. According to state Sen. Steve Halloran, each state can have their own plan and it would be approved by the USDA.
Discussion at Tuesday’s agriculture committee hearing centered around LB 1152. The bill cleans up language in order to bring Nebraska’s hemp program in line with the USDA’s approved plan.
A stipulation in the bill lets any qualified farmer cultivate hemp instead of just the ten who received the permit last year. The farmers concur with this. A matter of concern for the farmers is that the bill contains content restricting the transportation of the crop. The state Department of Agriculture voted in favor of the bill, which is a good step forward. Steve Wellman, the Nebraska Director of Agriculture, will work with the legislature and the industry to ensure that the Nebraska Hemp Farming Program goes as planned.
