Hemp Education Was Highlight Of Iowa Power Farming Show
One of the busiest booths at the Iowa Power Farming Show was for a crop that technically isn’t able to be grown in the state. At the show, Nebraska Hemp Industry Association and the Iowa Hemp Association got together to educate the hemp growers on the benefits and challenges of cultivating industrial hemp.
“It’s been kind of constant,” Watson said. “A lot of people are hearing things about hemp, and people are wondering ‘Can you really make that kind of money on an acre? That’s five times what we are making on corn.’ I’m blown away at how many people are actually kicking this around.”
Iowa planned to submit its hemp proposal to the USDA towards the end of January. If successful, it would all the farmers to cultivate industrial hemp. Iowa has high hopes, especially after Nebraska recently received approval. Hemp has no federal crop insurance coverage at the moment but there are some options available to minimize and mitigate risk. Farmers are also not sure what to do once the hemp is grown and how the next steps work.
Health products based on hemp is a rapidly growing trend and most business owners say that they are finding it excellent value. Even companies like Mercedes Benz have talked about potentially setting up hemp fiber market chains. In addition to this, it will also have medicinal opportunities.
