Researchers Says Hemp Farmers Will Help To Grow Economic Conditions In Nebraska
Feb 3 was the first day that people in Nebraska could apply for a license to cultivate hemp. According to a hemp researcher in the state, growing hemp can improve the economic conditions in the state. Andrea Holmes, a professor at the Doane University, had requested permission last year to research hemp products.
The Nebraska Department of Agriculture mentioned that they could potentially collect as much as $236,000 in hemp licensing fee. Out of the 315 licenses to be issued, 270 are for cultivator licenses, 30 for processor-handler licenses, and 15 for broker licenses. The department also mentioned that the state could have about 400 different cultivation sites.
This is a revolution for the farmers in Nebraska, opening up a new avenue of opportunity. Hemp Vision is a new company that has already begun developing hemp products to design its sunglasses. According to the owner of the business, using hemp reduces his cost since it is relatively cheap bio-based material. As of now, he receives his materials from North Dakota and is not planning to apply for a license in Nebraska due to some regulations. Nebraska has great potential and could become a primary factor in the hemp industry, and it could, of course, use the economic boom.
Holmes also wants Nebraska to look into a trifunctional hemp crop. This would allow hemp growers to grow for fibers, CBD and its grains.
