FDA Regulations On CBD Are Slow And Uncertain. But At Least The Commissioner Says There Is No Plan To Ban It.
Stephen Hahn, the FDA Commissioner, discussed the agency’s actions and the progress happened in establishing regulations for CBD. He believes that many companies have made unsanctioned claims and more research is called for before decisions can be taken about commercial marketing of these products.
The commissioner noted that the FDA has issued warnings to businesses claiming their CBD products can treat cancer or Alzheimer’s disease, which he described as “the highest risk areas.”
The very fact that these products are out in the market is an indicator that the citizens are open to using it. Now, Hahn feels that it is up to the FDA to make sure that they are safe and beneficial for them to use before they are lawfully allowed.
A step towards this was taken when the FDA submitted an overdue report. It stated that they are considering allowing the cannabis-based products to be sold in the market as dietary supplements. This will make sure that companies cannot make claims but still give access to those who require it. The commissioner also mentioned that having more data will help the FDA understand how better they can enforce the rules and make better decisions. He also said that working with legitimate manufacturers is in the cards to understand how these products can be developed and marketed safely.
