Does CBD Help For Dogs? Four-Time Iditarod Champion Lance Mackey Believes So.
Four-time Iditarod champion Lance Mackey is augmenting his dog food with CBD, along with other more standard things like psyllium and nutritional supplements.
He believes that it pushes the dogs to perform better at the 1,000-mile race. CBD has been recently gaining popularity as relaxants and pain relievers for humans and pets alike. While Mackey was asked by the Iditarod’s head veterinarian not to give his dogs CBD, he feels that he would continue the practice since it is not harmful in any way. There are no rules against it and CBD is not tested or among the banned substances in the race.
Mackey says Nelson believes that the product does not have enough information to warrant feeding to the dogs. However, Mackey himself has heard several positive stances. He had given CBD to nine retired sled dogs and all of them faced marked improvements. While it was not a scientific study, it still gave him some insight. Dennis Kananowicz of Tolsona is another musher who uses CBD. The High Expedition, a dispensary in Talkeetna, has a partnership with Mackey which gives him $100 worth of CBD tincture every day for free.
