As With Many Things, The Coronavirus Has Created A Pause For Nebraska’s Medical Marijuana Campaign
Nebraska activists announced last week that they are suspending signature gathering for the next few weeks due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This campaign is working to get signatures from the citizens to legalize medical marijuana in the state. This is one way how the pandemic is affecting drug policy reform efforts. Despite this, the citizens remain confident that they will win.
The proposed constitutional amendment will let the doctors to recommend cannabis to those suffering from debilitating medical conditions. They would be able to purchase and even cultivate for personal use. The goal of the campaign was to collect about 130,000 signatures by July 8, but there have been no updates on how far they have got.
But the Nebraska campaign—which also recently announced it is receiving assistance from a property tax reduction coalition—is far from the only reform effort that’s being set back by the coronavirus outbreak.
Both the amendment of the state’s marijuana program and the legalization of the psilocybin mushrooms campaign are on hold at the moment. The activists are requesting the government to accept digital signature collection for them to qualify for the November ballot.
