Even in the cannabis industry, many companies are claiming that the plant could help provide protection against the coronavirus. The benefits of CBD became known when it became apparent that CBD could help with epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome. Kyle Turley, a retired NFL player and a big promoter of CBD, recently tweeted that CBD can protect us from the coronavirus.

Cytokines are proteins that respond to an infection by triggering inflammation. However, the immune system can overreact to infection and release too many cytokines — ergo the term “cytokine storm” — resulting in hyper-inflammation, which can be deadly.

However, there are no studies that talks about COVID-19 and cytokines. However, there have been studies that the use of CBD can help in treating autoimmune inflammatory conditions. At the moment, there is no data or study to suggest that cannabis can cure or protect one from COVID-19. It is misleading and could reflect badly on the industry, something the industry can ill afford, especially since there is already a lot of misconceptions around it.
