Will The Lesser Known Cannabinoids Soon Take The Main Stage As Research Increases?
The 2018 Farm Bill and the legalization of hemp and hemp derivatives have both helped CBD gain popularity. However, the fact that the FDA is against it has led to an increase in products containing other cannabinoids. Research is going on as to how these lesser-known components can be used as foods or dietary supplements.
CBG is the main cannabinoid that assists in synthesizing other cannabinoids like CBD and THC. CBG is believed to have antibacterial properties, decrease inflammation, and treat glaucoma. According to the federal definition, both CBG and CBN are hemp and hence, are considered legal if they have less than 0.3% THC.
CBN strains, however, may not afford the same advantage, given most growers’ inability to cultivate CBN-rich strains. Nevertheless, technologies that convert CBD and THC into CBN are beginning to emerge. This technological change will create a new set of legal issues.
These two components are not approved or examined by the FDA which means the Drug Exclusion Rule will not apply to them and hence, these can be marketed freely. As of now, the FDA has named hulled hemp seed, hemp seed protein powder, and hemp seed oil, as safe or GRAS. This means that it has been found safe by experts in the field but has not been examined by the agency itself. Under the FDCA, sale of CBG and CBN products seem a bit risky since there has not been a lot of research on them.
