Medical cannabidiol patients in Iowa now have only one company’s products to choose from as the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic forces the state’s only other licensed CBD manufacturer to shutter its operations.
Have A Heart Compassionate Care had to close down in March followed by the closure of Acreage Holdings’ cannabis facilities like its Iowa Relief wholesale plant. Today, MedPharm’s facility in Des Moines becomes Iowa’s sole manufacturer of medical marijuana products. Under Iowa’s strict medical cannabidiol program, cannabis products can only be given in the form of tinctures, capsules, or topicals with less than 0.3% THC.
To qualify for cannabis therapy, the patient will require a doctor’s recommendation and be diagnosed with one or more of about a dozen qualifying medical conditions. Parkinson’s disease, cancer, multiple sclerosis, or terminal illness with less than a year’s life expectancy will all meet the requirements for medical marijuana treatment. The fact that the state’s medical cannabidiol program has very strict rules for its functioning makes it difficult to continue operating.
