Overwhelming Majority Of New York College Students Favor Cannabis Legalization While New Yorkers As A Whole Are Still Split On The Issue
The Syracuse University student-driven reporting project focuses on marijuana problems in New York as the state’s drug laws still remain unstable. A NewsHouse survey found that over 250 New York college students believed that marijuana is beneficial and should be legalized. Over 90% of the participants in the survey were in support of recreational marijuana being legalized in the state. The same survey also concluded that cannabis was used freely in college campuses across New York. It appears that students are more concerned about the poor effects of cigarettes and alcohol on their health compared to marijuana. The survey had a lot of Syracuse University students, but also participants from 13 other New York universities.
NY was ready to make some significant changes to the marijuana law this year, but the pandemic has put a stop to it. It will be at least one more year until the lawmakers make time for it. With regards to the entire population of NY, 58% of registered New York voters supported the legalization. Students are not worried about a change in campus culture since it is already rampant. Students believe it allows them to concentrate better, beat stress, and have better mental health.
Two-thirds of respondents said they would sign up for such a course involving marijuana.
