Consumers Believe CBD Can Be Effective For Chronic Pain Reducing Usage Of Opioids
A new survey of more than 1,450 CBD consumers concluded that CBD helps with chronic pain and about 84% of CBD consumers believe CBD is an effective alternative to opioids.
While the majority of respondents were both regular CBD consumers and millennials, non-regular users represented about one-third of respondents, while Baby Boomers represented about 8% of respondents, Gen Z represented about 12%, and Gen X about 19%.
As much as 97% of the participants mentioned using fewer opioids after starting to use CBD and about 40% said they had completely stopped their opioid use. Due to the lack of controlled studies, it is tough to understand if users are experiencing benefits due to the product or due to their expectations itself.
Tory R. Spindle, Ph.D., Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, believes that this study is very helpful in understanding the next steps. With controlled research, we would be able to understand the pain-relieving effects of CBD. While most consumers fully support CBD and stand by its effects, the FDA is still skeptical. Last April, the agency sent warning letters to two CBD companies claiming that CBD products can help with opioid addiction and could work as alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs.
