Phase III Clinical Trial To Study Potential Benefits Of CBD For Severe Behavior Problems In Children With Autism
The team at University of California San Diego School of Medicine are looking for 30 children who can participate in a Phase III clinical trial, a randomized, double-blind, crossover study, to understand if CBD can help with severe behavior problems in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). They are testing CBD oil to understand if it is useful in treating children with ASD and if it helps in reducing the severity of the condition.
Studies using animals modeling ASD have shown that CBD has similar effects: Excitatory neurotransmitters are inhibited, leading to a reduction of behavioral and social deficits characteristic of ASD.
Children with epilepsy are not included in the study. In the first stage of the study, half of the participants will be given a placebo and the other half CBD. They are both flavored oral drops. In the second stage, the groups would be alternated. With ASD affecting an estimated one in 68 children in the United States, it is important to understand the issue and if CBD could potentially help in treating it.
