Can CBD Really Help Older Dogs With Osteoarthritis? New Study Shows Benefits For Aging Dogs.
More and more research is indicating that CBD can help older dogs. Dr. Matthew Halpert talked with the host Matt Baum on the Ministry of Hemp podcast on how CBD can help aging dogs suffering from osteoarthritis. Aging causes inflammation by itself and is one of the main causes of osteoarthritis in people and dogs. To deal with inflammation, many use steroids, which usually come with a load of side effects making them largely unpopular, but quite effective. Thanks to CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties, it is recommended for pain relief, reducing inflammation, and decreasing anxiety. The company is also looking at potentially doing a human clinical trial. The double-blinded placebo-controlled trial included the company and the vets as they monitored the dogs.
The dogs received CBD or placebo every day for a month. The data from the trial showed that there were no issues with the liver, kidneys, or any other side effects. The owners filled out the Helsinki Pain Scale Chronic Pain Index. A significant difference was seen in the group of dogs that had CBD – in just 30 days. The trial used low dosages of CBD since it would be safer and will not be absorbed better otherwise. This would also avoid the liver, thereby preventing a host of other problems. Dr. Halpert has also reached out to the FDA with the results of the research since the agency also regulates the animal sector.
Obviously with this publication in tow, we absolutely I think have the justification to do a secondary K-9 trial if we want to do some more invasive things.
