Polls Show CBD And Cannabis Use Much Higher In Some Sports Than Others, Along With Their Fans
Fans of e-sports, the UFC and racing are the most likely to use marijuana or CBD, according to a survey released on Friday. The least cannabis-friendly sports fans are those who watch baseball, golf and football.
Morning Consult conducted a poll with 1,269 U.S. participants to understand how common cannabis usage is among 14 groups of self-identified sports fans. Where 35% of e-sports fans smoke or ingest marijuana often or sometimes and 29% used CBD products, only 20% of MLB fans consumed marijuana and 17% CBD. Golf fans were among the group that consumed cannabis the least frequently. It is quite surprising since PGA is one among the two leagues that actually allows CBD sponsorships. Most other leagues allow gambling and alcohol sponsorships, but all of them shy away from marijuana.
Marijuana is classified as an illegal Schedule I drug by the U.S. government (although it is legal in 11 of its states). The new poll comes at a time when many professional sports leagues are looking at internal marijuana and CBD regulations for their players. MLB announced earlier this year that the players would not be required to test for cannabis consumption. However, it is still against the rules to be sponsored by a marijuana company. NFL also ended suspensions for positive drug tests as well.
