Will Nebraska Once Again Become A National Leader In Hemp Production?
During World War II, Nebraska was leading the way in industrial hemp production to manufacture uniforms, canvas and other things. Today, if the state takes up its old role again, it could do an admirable job of supporting its economy. However, this time around, one would require planning and cooperation to make it a monetary success.
The Nebraska Legislature this session approved a set of practical improvements.
They mentioned the THC levels, giving clarity on the issue since there are no specifications set by the FDA. Nebraska’s licensed growers have also increased from 10 in 2019 to 270 this year, thanks to the 2018 Farm Bill. In addition to providing a lucrative source of income, it also offers Nebraska the opportunities to use the crop for making other materials.
However, the state needs to find a way to overcome its legal obstacles before it can start growing hemp on a large level. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has helped by providing excellent technical expertise and research support. The coronavirus pandemic has also impacted the growth and demand for these products. Farmers having an organic certification can easily make twice or thrice the number of farmers without, making it an important addition to one’s portfolio. With the elections almost upon us, it is also time to find safer alternatives in this pandemic. Mail-in ballots are an option, but security is questionable and the postal service’s efficiency is also under fire.
