Will There Be Hemp Production At A Former Shopping Mall In A Small Nebraska City?
The Nebraska City Planning Commission voted Wednesday to recommend tax increment financing for a proposed development of the former VF Mall property into an industrial hemp facility.
Kore Holdings is planning for vertical integration at the site, according to developer Derek Kats. The idea behind this operation is to do the propagation of the seed, the actual cultivation of the product, and then followed by the manufacturing, packaging and processing. They have plans to open a retail store at the front as well if zoning permits are granted. While both an indoor and outdoor cultivation areas are proposed, Kats believes that the latter could be removed. The vote to recommend was done after a letter received from the Nebraska City Area EDC stated that the eight full-time jobs in the original proposal do not warrant the use of public funds.
EDC Director Dan Mauk said that the board’s letter was drafted before the developer, Kore Holdings, presented its plan to the directors and about 20 jobs will be created as the facility starts running. The directors are mainly concerned about hemp production and the stigma it carries. They are trying to gauge how the public will receive it. While CBD oil is all the rage right now, there is a chance that the focus will shift to fiber and textiles in the future. To deal with stigma, we first need to understand and then educate others about hemp and marijuana and how they are completely different.
