Although Positive Results Are Obvious, Veterinarians Have Mixed Feelings About CBD. This Is Largely Due To The Lack Of Research For Pets.
Pet owners can rejoice since research suggests your fur babies can enjoy the benefits that CBD products have to offer. Since the FDA has only approved one CBD-based drug called Epidiolex, veterinarians can prescribe only Epidiolex to their animal patients. There are three different types of products – isolates containing only CBD, full-spectrum products containing THC and CBD, and broad-spectrum products containing a variety of cannabinoids except for THC. Taking them in combination creates the entourage effect, allowing users to enjoy better health benefits. Regardless, many vets are not completely comfortable with recommending CBD products.
A Cornell University study showed that CBD can reduce pain in dogs with osteoarthritis.
Other research shows that giving pups with epilepsy CBD oil reduced the frequency of their seizures. The majority of research has used single-compound, CBD-only formulas, not full- or broad-spectrum options.
There have not been any randomized, controlled clinical trials but these anecdotal accounts are quite promising. Studies also found that nearly 22% of 833 vets surveyed said that CBD was very helpful in managing anxiety in their pets. The same study found that 61% of the participating vets said CBD products were “somewhat effective” in treating firework or storm phobias. The pleasing thing here is that CBD products don’t have any major negative side effects in pets, except maybe gastrointestinal upsets. Since CBD pet products are not regulated by the FDA, make sure you do your homework before choosing a product for your pet.
