If a child is on the more severe side of the spectrum displaying self-injurious behavior or aggression to themselves or others, doctors might prescribe antipsychotics, antidepressants, or sedatives. CBD is an effective treatment for autism as it interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS) to make sure neural activity remains in balance.

While we do require more research on autism, it’s well documented that endocannabinoid alterations contribute to the development of various psychiatric and neurological disorders. A gene expression study on postmortem brains of subjects with autism found that they have reduced CB1 receptor expression impacting the ability of ECS to maintain neurological homeostasis. Understanding the endocannabinoid system’s significance in the development of autism could lead to a more holistic therapeutic approach for managing ASD patients’ complex clusters of behavioral difficulties and health disorders.

In a retrospective study analyzing the data of 188 children with ASD who were mostly given cannabis oil over six months, about 30.1% of the participants said that they experienced a significant improvement in their condition with an additional 53.7% experiencing moderate benefits. For many autistic users, CBD-based products with THC tend to work the best. However, CBD-only products showed results in others as well.
