Does CBD Affect Women Differently? New Research Looks To Explore The Science Behind This Unique Cannabinoid.
CBD is a non-intoxicating compound of the cannabis plant and it is known to help with a variety of symptoms. In 2019, more than 64 million Americans reported using CBD, the majority of them are female. Manufacturers of these products have claimed that it can help reduce pain and anxiety, improve sleep, and treat depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and more. However, we don’t have enough research to prove these claims due to which the FDA has only approved one CBD-based drug to treat two rare and severe forms of epilepsy. Dr. Sarah Lichenstein will now lead a study to understand how CBD could affect behavior and the brain to determine how it affects women and if the compound affects men and women differently – all thanks to funding from Women’s Health Research at Yale.
In collaboration with Drs. Sarah Yip and Ayana Jordan, Dr. Lichenstein is focusing on CBD’s potential to treat anxiety disorders, the most common reason cited by CBD users for their interest in these products and a condition that is twice as prevalent among women than men.
Currently, the most common medical treatment for anxiety disorders is benzodiazepines which are associated with a significant risk of abuse and fatal overdose, especially when combined with opioids or alcohol. CBD presents a potentially promising alternative to benzodiazepines for treating anxiety. This study is important since most of our knowledge on how gender can influence cannabis’ treatment comes from animal studies. Study participants (all females) will take either the FDA-approved CBD oral solution known commercially as Epidiolex or an inert placebo. Researchers will record the effects while the participants undertake tasks designed to reliably induce low levels of stress. This initial step could later help shape treatments for people with anxiety disorders.
