Can CBD Help With Cognition, A Better Quality Of Life For Seniors And Those Suffering From Dementia?
A new question must be added to the list that mental health clinicians ask their older patients while taking a history, regardless of age: “Have you used any cannabis products recently?”
In many instances, when patients have not tried cannabis products, they are willing to try them. Older people with psychiatric disorders have also started to use more cannabis, usually as CBD. The fact that there is reduced stigma now along with lifted restrictions on possession and sale by most states, and advertisements around the product’s benefits for treating depression, stress, anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, peripheral neuropathy, inflammation, headaches, and even the adverse effects of chemotherapy. Due to these reasons, the use of medical marijuana by individuals over the age of 65 has grown by as much as 8 times in recent years.
While there are many established claims to its benefits, there are also claims without any evidence of CBD’s ability to treat Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, schizophrenia, and anxiety and mood disorders. While there have been several studies to understand this, more research is needed. There are several drawbacks to using cannabis as well, including the fact that heavy marijuana use by both young and middle-aged adults could lead to mild functional and structural brain impairments which could impact verbal memory, processing speed, attention, executive function, and motor coordination. While CBD is mostly tolerated well, one of the most common side effects is diarrhea followed by drowsiness, fatigue, nausea, dry mouth, and mood swings. It is important to educate patients about how CBD works, its benefits, side effects, and the difference between THC and CBD since it is largely unregulated.
