CBD Vs OCD! Could This Non-Psychoactive Cannabinoid Help Manage Symptoms Of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?
The ever-increasing amount of anecdotal and scientific evidence indicating cannabis can help with anxiety has some people wondering if it could help manage Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) as well. Researchers are also finding that CBD can help with mental illnesses like Tourette’s syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and schizophrenia, make it easy to see why one would think it could similarly benefit those with OCD. However, there is not a lot of solid evidence indicating cannabis diminishes the symptoms of OCD.
And while much of the research is hopeful (one study showed a 60% decrease in compulsions after using cannabis), the only double-blind, randomized study on the subject showed cannabis had no significant effect on participants suffering from OCD. Additionally, there’s a legitimate fear that THC could heighten paranoia and repetitive thoughts, since it has been known to increase anxiety for certain users.
Researchers feel that cannabis has the potential to help people with OCD by complementing SSRIs since many build up a tolerance to these drugs over time. Cannabis can also help with symptom management and it can reduce anxiety, stress, and repetitive thoughts. Different strains can offer different effects and when one finds a particularly effective strain, it could work wonders for them while dealing with OCD and its symptoms. If you are planning to start using CBD for OCD, it might be a good idea to consult with a doctor first.
