Researchers Trying To Better Understand Why Cannabis Terpenes And CBD Are Beneficial Against Coronavirus
A study titled “In Vitro Evaluation of the Activity of Terpenes and Cannabidiol against Human Coronavirus E229” was published by the peer-reviewed journal Life recently which showed that a combination of compounds present in cannabis could treat or even prevent coronavirus infections in human lung cells. The research studied the antiviral action of a proprietary formula of terpenes, which are natural volatile compounds found in many plants including cannabis. The formulation, known as NT-VRL, is a combination of 30 terpenes including beta-caryophyllene, citral, and eucalyptol developed by cannabis technology company Eybna. Research released by Eybna last year found that NT-VRL combined with CBD is an effective treatment for the severe inflammatory response seen in Covid-19 patients known as a cytokine storm.
All of the compounds in the study showed varying degrees of antiviral activity. When NT-VRL and CBD were applied together, however, the two substances showed a synergistic antiviral effect that was stronger than the positive controls pyrazofurin and glycyrrhizin.
If a clinical trial finds cannabis is successful in preventing coronavirus infections because NT-VRL terpenes are also found in cannabis strains, smoking or vaping cannabis could possibly be effective. Researchers and experts agree that users should not consider cannabis use as protection from the virus and we need more data before anything can be established. For developing the NT-VRL, Phase 2 clinical trial is planned for the second quarter of 2021 at one of Israel’s leading hospitals to determine if the product exhibits the same benefits in Covid-19 patients. If successful, this could be an effective defense against the coronavirus.
