Studies Show CBD Impacts A Number Of Factors That Contribute To Sleep
The brain’s master circadian clock is primarily responsible for regulating sleep-wake cycles, synchronizing circadian rhythms, and many other physiological functions, including metabolism, appetite, and immunity. Research indicates that CBD and other cannabinoids may affect the timing of circadian clocks.
Studies have also shown that CBD can affect specific “clock genes” that regulate the timing of circadian clocks, leading some researchers to suggest CBD as a possible treatment for circadian-clock-related disorders.
Some research in animal models shows that CBD may help strengthen sleep-wake cycles and increase sleep amounts. CBD can also address abnormalities of REM sleep. CBD has been shown effective in treating REM sleep behavior disorder in patients with Parkinson’s syndrome. REM sleep behavior disorder is a condition that causes people to act out physically during dreaming and REM sleep. REM sleep behavior disorder is associated with neurological and neurodegenerative conditions including Parkinson’s disease, PTSD, and narcolepsy and it looks like CBD could possibly help treat this.
Besides treating sleep disorders, CBD is known for its analgesic (pain-relieving) and anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) properties as well. CBD also has shown anti-depressant effects in animal models and can increase serotonin levels in the brain. While there is plenty of anecdotal evidence that CBD can help with sleep problems, there is insufficient research done to be established as a possible treatment.
CBD can alleviate chronic pain associated with inflammation, multiple sclerosis, and cancer. The fact that CBD functions as an anti-inflammatory agent makes it a promising therapy for treating inflammation and offering protection from inflammation-related sleep disruptions. CBD works by calming the body’s central nervous system and soothing anxiety allowing for better and undisturbed sleep. It also looks like the dosage and timing could play a role with studies finding that those with anxiety tended to take a dose in the morning and those with sleep disorders in the evening. Circadian rhythms influence the body’s biological responses to medications and supplements. CBD may have a role in treating some sleep disorders, mood disorders, and pain disorders that affect sleep.
