Three Year Research Trial To Look At The Effectiveness Of CBD And THC For Children With Advanced Cancer
The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in Australia has received funding of about $700,000 to investigate the efficacy, safe dosage, and side effects associated with CBD and THC. Around 770 children aged up to 14 years are diagnosed with cancer every year in Australia and about 100 of them under the age of 15 years die from it annually. This initiative is taken in the hopes that medicinal cannabis could relieve their pain in the final stages of their illness. A 3-year QUT trial will compare different ratios and combinations of CBD and THC to determine which is the more effective in managing symptoms in children with advanced cancer, including pain, lack of appetite and energy, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting. They will also record the impact it has on other related factors like anxiety, sleep, depression, and activity.
Sleep is an important factor in this since they may not have long to live and sleep can affect their quality of life. The study marks the first time such an investigation has taken place in Australia involving medicinal cannabis and children with cancer receiving palliative care.
While exploratory in nature rather than a definitive randomized controlled study due to the frailty of the children, it’s envisioned the research will make a significant contribution to the current scant scientific evidence currently available.
This clinical trial is a great win from all aspects as kids will be able to take CBD and other medicines and the clinicians will be able to observe the impacts in a structured and controlled way. The cash for the trial has come from Australia’s Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF).
