Why Does President Biden’s Budget Proposal Block D.C. From Legalizing Marijuana Sales?
There’s plenty going on the marijuana/cannabis world! Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), House Judiciary Committee Chairman, re-filed his bill to federally legalize marijuana.
President Joe Biden’s budget proposes continuing to block Washington, D.C. from legalizing marijuana sales. But he is the first president to suggest keeping the separate rider that protects state medical cannabis laws from Department of Justice interference, a provision that both Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump sought to delete.
The Connecticut legislature’s Appropriations Committee has approved the governor’s marijuana legalization bill while Rhode Island representatives recently filed for a new marijuana legalization bill. On a federal level, several former federal drug czars and organizations sent a letter calling on President Joe Biden to appoint a director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. Rep. Kurt Schrader (D-OR) has participated in a briefing about his bill to allow CBD as a dietary supplement.
Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) and Florida’s agriculture commissioner tweeted in support of marijuana legalization while Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey (R) vetoed the marijuana packaging and research bills. Massachusetts regulators have announced that a new marijuana delivery license type is available for equity and economic empowerment applicants. Seattle and Washington mayoral candidates discussed about drug decriminalization during a debate. In international news, Czech Republic’s Ministry of Health has opposed a lawmaker’s proposal to allow safe drug consumption sites while in the UK, more than 50 members of Parliament and peers have signed a statement calling for broad drug policy reform.
