Has your cat been hiding out under the bed for days? Dog whimpering at the slightest “bang” or “pop” heard in the distance? Thunderstorms and fireworks are scary for our pets. Luckily with some planning, and the help of CBD, their stress and anxiety can be minimized.
It’s quite literally the perfect storm of stress for your pets this time of year where thunder and lighting followed by fireworks seem to be a daily (and nightly) occurrence. Most pet owners can expect if there isn’t a thunderstorm in the evening their neighbors will make there own noise and light show.
Most cities have ordinances allowing for fireworks only a handful of days a year or maybe a zero tolerance on fireworks. But, as we all know, many aren’t so good at following those guidelines. In fact, in most places fireworks start a few weeks before Independence Day and trickle on for a few weeks after. Add some intense storms on top of that and this time of year can be stressful for both animals and their owners.
Regardless of our personal feelings about fireworks and thunderstorms we all know that pets don’t enjoy them. The abrupt noises can cause panic for anxious dogs causing many to run away. And often times cats disappear for days on end. Many times never to be seen again.
For us the 4th of July may be a time full of patriotism, food, and fireworks. But for our cats and dogs it’s a time full of fear, stress, and anxiety. Animal control officials report 30% more pets become lost between between July 4th and 6th than any other time of year.
Here are a few simple tips on keeping your four-legged furry friends safe this time of year:
1). Access to a safe space: Comfort your pets with pets as needed and stay nearby if possible. Make sure you allow them easy access to their safe space whether that be a dog crate, pet bed, or even under your bed.
2). Keep them inside: Keeping your pets indoors as much as possible this year will minimize the chance they get scared and run off. Also, having someone with your pets while inside will help their anxiety particularly for dogs who may feel their owners are being threatened by the loud outdoor noises.
3). Avoiding the noises: As nice as it can be for use to have the windows open to hear fireworks or thunder rolling in the distance these noises can be terrifying for our pets. If you’re pets are showing signs of increased anxiety you can minimize it by keeping windows closed and have sounds in your home. Maybe some relaxing music or just keep your tv on.
4). Be cool: Pets pick up on our own anxiety. So if you’re stressed they’ll feel that there is something they should be stressed about as well. During this time of year go about your normal daily routine. Perhaps taking some CBD wouldn’t be a bad thing for pet owners as well such as our CBD edibles.
5). Pet ID tags & GPS devices: Even if you pet is generally always indoor be sure to have a collar on them with contact information. This is particularly relevant for cats who may slip out the door without you even noticing for a day or two. There are also inexpensive GPS pet tracking devices that can be attached to collars that will help you in locating a missing pet.
6). Adding calming products: Provide your pets naturally calming products such as anxiety wraps and CBD pet treats. It’s amazing how well a simple anxiety wrap can help a cat or dog during stressful times throughout the year. That added with some daily CBD pet treats can be the difference between a complete meltdown or a mellow pet.
