Anxiety and depression are obviously very different. But those suffering from either often experience similar symptoms such as irritability, problems sleeping, nervousness, and lack of concentration. Nearly half of those diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder.
On top of that, chronic stress can affect your health with symptoms ranging from headaches, high blood pressure, skin rashes, and loss of sleep. Over time the ongoing strain caused by stress can contribute to serious health concerns as well as amplify disorders such as depression or anxiety.
Without some form of treatment depression and anxiety will limit a person’s ability to work, maintain relationships, and overall health. So by managing your anxiety, stress, and depression you’re also taking care of your physical health.
Research And Studies Of CBD For Anxiety
For around 18% of the U.S. population, anxiety is the most common form of mental health disorder. More and more patient evidence, as well as animal studies, support the powerful anti-anxiety properties that CBD provides. CBD may be beneficial to treat a number of anxiety-related disorders such as generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, and mild to moderate depression.
In a small CBD study participants suffering from social anxiety disorder performed a public speaking experiment after receiving 300 milligrams of CBD. Those participating showed much less anxiety with research supporting lowered anxiety indicators like blood pressure and heart rate.
Spanish researchers found that CBD may affect serotonin levels in the brain faster than SSRIs (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) such as Zoloft and Prozac in animals. This increased serotonin in the brain allows for reduced anxiety while boosting mood.
Is CBD Helpful For Depression?
Our World Data reports that over 250 million people worldwide suffer with depression. Depression is a mood disorder known for symptoms of perpetual sadness, a loss of interest, along with despair that leads to decreased energy, appetite, and oftentimes suicidal thoughts.
Like the serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) that are commonly prescribed to treat depression, CBD increases the amount of serotonin available to the body which helps to elevate mood.
CBD And Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
While many identify cannabis as a coping tool for those with post-traumatic stress disorder, science is showing that CBD is also an important method for healing.
For an individual suffering with PTSD traumatic memories often produce anxiety, nightmares, flashbacks, and depression. Research suggests CBD may have a role in memories of trauma by disrupting the way traumatic memories are stored and consolidated.
Injections of CBD were found to be useful for reducing “freezing behavior” in a study conducted in 2016. The study used rats that were exposed to strong fear-based conditioning. They were then given CBD showing significantly less fear when exposed to the same conditions in later experiments.
Another way that cannabidiol may support those suffering for post-traumatic stress disorder is by promoting sleep. Quality sleep is often difficult with nightmares being a common symptom of PTSD. CBD is showing positive results in aiding with rest for those suffering sleep troubles caused by post-traumatic stress disorder (122).
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a natural compound that has gained popularity in recent years. There is evidence that CBD may be a useful treatment for a number of medical conditions. However, this research is considerably less advanced than for treatment of epilepsy.
There are dozens of current clinical trials that are evaluating the potential benefits of CBD for a variety of disorders but considerably more research is required to evaluate CBD as an FDA approved treatment for anxiety and depression. At this time the only FDA approved cannabidiol drug was Epidiolex used for epilepsy, more specifically Dravet syndrome and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome.
