Does CBD Provide Benefits For Pet Health And Wellness?
CBD is one of many powerful cannabinoids found in hemp known for helping to support our body and mind. Here at Healing Dragon CBD we do not intend to make unfounded medical claims about the health benefits of CBD. The FDA has not confirmed that CBD cures, treats, or prevents any diseases or conditions. Before reading this article please take a moment to read our full disclosure statement.
Understandably many are still apprehensive about giving canabidiol to their pets. But the same great benefits we humans receive from CBD our four-legged friends can enjoy as well.
All mammals have an endocannabinoid system (ECS) including the family dog or cat. In fact, all vertebrates and invertebrates are known to have endocannabinoid systems.
We are learning more about the ECS all the time but what we currently know is it helps regulate homeostasis across all major body systems. This affects everything from sleep, appetite, pain, inflammation, memory, mood, and even reproduction.
The relationship between mankind and cannabis has been shown in some of our earliest civilizations with evidence of Chinese farmers growing hemp for oil and fiber more than 4,000 years. Far before researchers Allyn Howlett and William Devane discovered cannabinoid receptors in 1988.
But in recent years we’ve discovered the symbiotic relationship between man and cannabis is through our endocannabinoid system. This relationship applies to all mammals and quite possibly all vertebrates and invertebrates. And pet owners are paying attention to the benefits of CBD for their furry friends.
What Is CBD And Can It Help My Pet?
Short for cannabidiol, CBD is a chemical compound from the marijuana or hemp plant. Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the most known compound in cannabis , CBD will not get your pet high. The Farm Bill of 2018 made CBD legal as long as THC levels are below 0.3 percent.
The use of CBD for potential health benefits include help with anxiety, inflammation, pain relief, and seizures. And, as mentioned earlier, these great benefits apply to your pets as well.
Can CBD For Pet Anxiety Really Work?
Anxiety in every animal can be expressed differently. For signs of dog anxiety there is often pacing, trembling, barking, hyperactivity, lip licking, frequent yawning, decreased appetite, and agression. Symptoms of anxiety in cats are similar (minus the barking 😺) but are often shown in failure to use the litter box, with-drawl or hiding, and excessive grooming which can cause sores.
Our cats and dogs experience many types of anxiety with separation anxiety being one of most frequent. Another is social anxiety or being forced into unfamiliar environments.
And just like humans our pets can experience PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). In particular, many rescued dogs have this condition from being abused or neglected by previous owners.
One of the most common times for anxiety and stress in pets is during the 4th of July. The loud and sudden noises from fireworks will instinctively make your cats and dogs want to run or hide. Unfortunately this means a lot of pets go missing over the 4th of July weekend.
While there have been no formal studies on how CBD affects anxiety in pets many cat and dog owners have reported success. In fact, research published in 2014 found that CBD oil had anti-anxiety and antidepressant effects in an animal model.
How To Use CBD To Ease Pet Pain
If your pet is disabled, or just getting up there in age, you are quite aware of the pain and discomfort they experience in mobility. Reducing pain is of utmost importance for your pet’s quality of life. Persistent pain and inflammation or chronic conditions such as hip dysplasia or arthritis may be minimized with CBD.
For serious injuries or extreme pain our pets are often prescribed expensive medications such opioids. Obviously these medications are effective but, just as with humans, they come with some serious side effects including liver damage, overdose, and dependence.
Inflammation is a continual source of pain for many pets with daily use of NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). These drugs come with their own list list of side effects including everything from vomiting and diarrhea to more serious effects such as liver toxicity and kidney failure.
Studies have shown CBD to be effective for pain management with its anti-inflammatory properties. A European Journal of Pain study showed that CBD applied on the skin could help lower pain and inflammation due to arthritis using an animal model.
Published in Bioorganic and Medicinal Chemistry, a 2015 review found CBD to reduce inflammation in the body and would be an effective treatment for a range of conditions characterized by inflammation.
Can You Use CBD For Pets With Seizures?
CBD has also been extremely effective for seizure control with the FDA’s only approved cannabidiol drug, Epidiolex, being used for two rare and severe seizure disorders in adults and children.
Seeing your dog or cat have a seizure is a frightening experiencing caused by abnormal firing of neurons in the brain. CBD for pets with seizures has also been promising with testimonials from pet parents being highly encouraging. Especially in cases where traditional treatments and conventional medications have not helped.
The American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation is currently conducting research on CBD’s effectiveness at treating seizures in dogs. Initial research found that nearly 90 percent of dogs who received CBD in clinical trials had reductions in the frequency of seizures. Another research project by the National Institute of Health has shown CBD reducing epileptic seizures in rodents.
